The Eagle's Landing girls soccer team is one shutout away from winning the Region 2-AAAAA championship.
The Lady Golden Eagles beat Morrow 7-0 Tuesday night to improve to 10-2-1 overall and 6-0-1 in region play.
If the Lady Golden Eagles shut out Stockbridge on April 13, they will capture the region crown for the second straight season.
"If we get a shutout, we win the region," Eagle's Landing George Phillips said. "We have to get the shutout because we're tied with Jonesboro and that will be the tiebreaker. I sure hope we can. We're going to have to step it up and we'll have to get in some good practices during the break."
In Tuesday's victory, Eagle's Landing led 4-0 at the half and added three goals in the second half to take the victory.
Sophomore Sara Samchok led the way with three goals and freshmen Lauren Hawkins and Lindsey Hawkins added two goals each.
Samchok started the game at goalkeeper but only played a few minutes before senior Meagan Thomas took over for the rest of the game.
Morrow drops to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the region.
Eagle's Landing 4, Morrow 0 (boys): Goalkeeper Robbie Serpas recorded nine saves to help the Golden Eagles defeat Morrow.
"He's phenomenal," Eagle's Landing head coach Marc Cool said. "He's really stepping it up and he's just a junior this year. We're very happy about that."
Eagle's Landing led 1-0 at the half with the only scoring coming at the 20-minute mark when Chris Hawkins scored.
With about 19 minutes remaining in the second half, Ryan Wallace scored to give Eagle's Landing a 2-0 lead. Wallace struck again with about four minutes remaining to extend the Golden Eagles' lead to 3-0.
At the 37:08 mark, Eagle's Landing's Donald Kirkland scored on a penalty kick to cap the Golden Eagles' victory.
"They showed a lot of heart out there," Cool said. "It was a lot like the Jonesboro game (a scoreless tie on March 19) but we were able to score goals tonight. We're progressing and one we just one more region game so this one is really important."
Eagle's Landing improves to 6-5-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the region.
Morrow drops to 2-6-3 overall and 0-5-2 in region play. Even though the Mustangs are winless in the region, they tied Henry County and Warner Robins, two teams with winning records.
"They played all 80 minutes tonight," Cool said. "My hat's off to them."
