The Jonesboro Cardinals advanced to the second round of the Class AAAAA state baseball tournament by sweeping Effingham County Friday night on the road.

Jonesboro won the first game 5-4 in eight innings.

Ty Lewis was the winning pitcher and Harold Walker provided the winning run when he scored on a wild pitch.

Jonesboro won the second game 3-2. Frankie Crawley was the winning pitcher.

LaGrange defeats Luella: The Luella Lions made it to the Class AAA state tournament in their first season but they made an early exit, falling to LaGrange on the road. LaGrange entered the tournament as the No. 1 team in Class AAA in the state coaches' poll.

LaGrange won the first game 8-1 and won the second game 7-0.

"We just didn't hit the ball that well and made some mistakes," Luella head coach Andy Cooper said.
