Mary Joyce Massengale, 71, of Griffin, died May 15, 2004, at her residence. She had lived in Jonesboro for 42 years before moving to Pike County last July. For many years she was a volunteer softball and cheerleading coach and was on the board of the JAAA Youth Sports in Jonesboro. Massengale was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Jonesboro and attended Oak Hill Baptist Church in Griffin. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by a son, Preston Massengale; her parents, Farris Gaines "Doc" Blount and Myrtle Chappell Blount; and two brothers, Melvin Blount and Alvin Blount.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Hiram Massengale; sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Angie Massengale of Zebulon and Wayne Massengale of Pike County; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Bob Ward of Meansville and Wanda and Andy Godwin of Fayetteville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Virginia Blount of Meansville, Eugene Blount of Pike County, and Farris and Tanya Blount of Meansville; grandchildren, Kim Sexton, Brandi Ward, Astin Godwin, Tyler Godwin, Kyle Massengale, Joseph Massengale and J.P. Massengale; great-grandchildren, Grant Sexton, Chase Sexton and Alexxix Bell; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, May 17, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Stewart and the Rev. Ted Moody officiating. Interment will follow in Moody Memorial Gardens. Friends visited the family on Sunday evening.
