Police find inmate hours after escape

By Kathy Jefcoats

Less than two hours after he reportedly ran through an opening in the Henry County Jail fence, an Ellenwood man was captured with the help of a K-9 unit and dozens of law enforcement officers less than a half-mile from the facility.

Gerald Casmere, 23, of Avon Avenue was being held without bond since his May 26 arrest for armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He now also faces a felony escape charge.

Sheriff's Lt. Scott Perry said Casmere came outside for recreation with his cellblock just before 8:30 a.m. Monday.

"He went straight for the fence that had a hole cut into it," said Perry. "The investigation is ongoing but it appears the hole was cut from the outside."

Perry said Casmere took off running but with jail officers in the middle of an 8 a.m. shift change n and other law enforcement personnel at the jail for Magistrate Court n police were not far behind him.

With the aid of a Georgia State Patrol helicopter in the air, K-9 units from the Henry County Bureau of Police Services and Bill Hillsman on the ground, Casmere was found in the wooded area on Henry Parkway near O.B.'s Barbecue before 10:30 a.m.

He was still wearing his green jumpsuit, indicating his status as a member of the jail's general population. Jail records show he was housed in A-block n which means he was charged with a "most serious" offense. Perry said Casmere is considered dangerous but it is not believed he committed any crimes during his brief stint at freedom.

Perry said no other arrests had been made at press time and he has been unable to substantiate rumors that a car was waiting for Casmere.

Casmere was arrested for armed robbery May 26 with Jermour Quinterious Amey, 18, also of Avon Avenue. Henry police Lt. Ken Turner said at the time that the armed pair robbed two women as they left the Racetrack convenience store on Ga. Highway 138 in Stockbridge around 4:25 a.m.

Henry Superior Court Judge Hal Craig denied Casmere bond June 16. Clayton County and Union City have holds for armed robbery charges against Casmere, according to jail records. Casmere also reportedly had charges against him in Florida but authorities there refuse to extradite him.
