Clayton men earn first win

ORLANDO, Fla. ? The Clayton College & State University men's basketball team picked its first win of the season Sunday, defeating the University of North Florida 90-72 at the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic.

The Lakers raced out to a 52-23 lead in the first half and never looked back. Clayton State shot a sizzling 70 percent (21-of-30) from the floor, while holding North Florida to 25 percent (6-of-24) from the field in the first period.

Michael Sloan with 13:07 remaining in the first half. The Lakers pushed their lead to as many as 31 points, 46-15, with 4:54 remaining on two free throws by senior Carlton Holmes.

The Lakers now return home to face Reinhardt College in a 7:30 p.m. game tonght at the Athletics & Fitness Center.

Clayton State led by more than 20 points for most of the second half and by double-digits for the entire 20 minutes of the stanza.

The Lakers shot 64 percent from the field for the game, hitting 33 of 55 from the floor, while holding UNF to 39 percent, 22-of-57. Clayton State dominated the boards 38-29 and forced the Ospreys into 20 turnovers.

Senior Craig Butts led the club with 16 points and nine boards, followed by senior Rashad Williams and Holmes with 13 points apiece. Senior B.J.

Puckett chipped in 12 points, while junior Maxi Rios added 10.

Back in action: The Clayton State Lakers swing back into action tonight with the home opener against Reinhardt.
