A Hampton woman and her son are recovering from stab wounds police say they received from the mother's live-in boyfriend.
Around 8:45 a.m. Monday 17-year-old David Royal III and his father returned to the Spring Creek Drive home where Royal lived with his mother, 38-year-old Tora Royal, and her boyfriend Hector French Bennett, Clayton County Police Capt. Jeff Turner said. The father, 39-year-old David Royal Jr. of Riverdale, had had custody of the teen over the weekend and as the younger Royal went inside the father waited in the driveway to take the teen to school.
"As the son was going in the house he heard a commotion, went around the corner and saw the boyfriend stabbing his mother in the chest," Turner said.
When he realized the younger Royal was there, Bennett attacked him with the butcher knife, Turner said. Royal suffered minor injuries to his hands and neck before he could run outside to get his father.
The elder Royal grabbed a steering-wheel lock and began to chase Bennett. Bennett ran down the road where police and the elder Royal stopped him at Crystal Spring Road and Spring Creek Drive.
Bennett was arrested without resistance. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault.
Tora Royal was conscious and talking when she was taken to Atlanta Medical Center by air ambulance and Turner said her injuries were serious but she was still alive as of Monday evening.
The younger Royal was taken to Southern Regional Medical Center.
