Stock rises quickly in win over ELHS

The Stockbridge Tigers have taken more than their share of lumps this season and at halftime of Friday night's game at Eagle's Landing, they decided they had had enough.

The Tigers (2-5) trailed by eight points going into the break but came back with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat Eagle's Landing 21-14.

"I told them at halftime that we've been in this situation before and our seniors got up and said ?no more,'" said Stockbridge head coach Danny Fairbanks, whose team trailed 14-6 at halftime. "They got it together in the second half. It was so fun. It means everything for the program here at Stockbridge. No one believed in us but these kids believe and our coaches believe."

Stockbridge opened the season with a 35-7 victory over Dutchtown but dropped five straight games going into Friday night.

"There have been so many people who have given up on them but they did a great job," Fairbanks said. "It was phenomenal."

Xavier Glenn and Chris Cobb led the way for Stockbridge. Glenn had 12 carries for 114 yards and two touchdowns, including a 45-yarder in the second quarter and a 2-yarder in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 14-all.

Cobb had 14 carries for 97 yards with one touchdown, a 2-yard run that gave Stockbridge the lead with 58 seconds remaining.

Both of Stockbridge's fourth-quarter touchdowns were set up by turnovers.

With 1:30 remaining in the third quarter, Stockbridge's Paul Allis recovered a T.J. Tennant fumble at the Stockbridge 33 and eight plays later, Glenn scored to tie the game.

With 3:38 remaining in the fourth quarter, Alex Coleman intercepted a Marcus Williams pass. Five plays later, Cobb scored the winning touchdown for Stockbridge.

Eagle's Landing (1-5) had one last possession to close out the game. Williams completed two passes for 16 and 33 yards to get his team to the Stockbridge 42. With 20 seconds remaining, Eagle's Landing got off a bad snap and Hilson Barley recovered the fumble for Stockbridge.

"We knew it was going to be a battle and both teams were going to be up for this game," Fairbanks said. "That was a lot of fun."

Derek Climpson led Eagle's Landing with 90 rushing yards and one touchdown. Tennant had 72 yards on 14 carries for the Golden Eagles.

Friday's game was the first time since 2000 that Stockbridge has beaten Eagle's Landing. Fairbanks was an Eagle's Landing assistant before taking the head coaching job at Stockbridge last year.

"Danny and I have been friends for more than 20 years and we have a tremendous amount of respect for each other," Eagle's Landing head coach Bob Stinchcomb said.
