Mr. James Everett Carter, 82, of Griffin, formerly of Athens, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at the Brightmoor Nursing Center. Mr. Carter was born in Pike County Dec. 26, 1921, to the late Clifton Gerald Carter and the late Opal Shackelford Carter. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Martha Carter, and a step son, Tim Waldrop, of Athens, Ga. Mr. Carter was retired from Southern Bell with 41 years of service, a member of the Telephone Pioneers, and was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in World War II. Mr. Carter is survived by his wife, Darlene Vaughn Carter; son, Jim Carter of Jonesboro; daughter and son-in-law, Donna C. and James Szwast of St. Simons; daughter, Janet C. Walker of Athens; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; stepchildren; Keith and Bridgett Waldrop of Griffin, Lane Waldrop of Durango, Colo.; sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and Floyd Goodrum of Sharpsburg; brother, Wynton Carter of Tampa, Fla.; several nieces and nephews Graveside funeral services for Mr. James Everett Carter will be conducted on Friday, Oct. 22 at 11 a.m. in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Reverend Al Shackelford will officiate. Friends may visit the family on Thursday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Clayton County Humane Society. Conner-Westbury Funeral Home, 1891 West McIntosh Road, Griffin, is in charge of the arrangements.More like this story
