Lovejoy sweeps Henry pair

The Lovejoy Lady Wildcats volleyball team swept its games against Stockbridge (25-18, 25-16) and Luella (25-20 and 25-16) to improve 9-0 on the season.

"They played really well and have improved a lot," said head coach Laura Granger. "They have improved because of hard work and dedication.":

Lady Cardinals win region opener, 1-0

The Jonesboro Lady Cardinals improved their record to 1-1 and 1-0 in region play with a 1-0 victory against Southwest DeKalb.

Nichole Soto scored the winning run for the Lady Cardinals.

Soto advanced to first when the Southwest DeKalb catcher missed the third strike. Soto then stole second and third.

She then scored on a sacrifice fly by Donisha Harrison.

Heather Lowry was the winning pitcher, striking out 15 and walking none.

Jonesboro's game against Stone Mountain on Thursday has been changed to Sept. 22.

The Lady Cardinals are expected to play in this weekend in a softball tournament in Brunswick.

n Union Grove 18, Mundy's Mill 0: Megan Escue tossed a no-hitter as the Lady Wolverines beat Mundy's Mill n four innings in a Region 4-AAAAA contest at Mundy's Mill.

Ashley Hill went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Whitney McBurnett added two hits and two RBIs while Jennifer Hughes got two hits.

Union Grove improves to 13-3 and is ranked No. 4 this week in Class AAAAA in the gafastpitch.net state coaches poll.

n Henry County 2, Griffin 1: Tori Goggins was the offensive catalyst for the Ladyhawks Tuesday afternoon.

Henry County pitcher Amber Harrell struck out 15 en route to the win. The Ladyhawks improved to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in region play.

n Upson-Lee 2, Eagle's Landing 1: Teri Mesko struck out 12, allowed one hit and had the only RBI of the game for the Lady Golden Eagles.
