Lowry leading Lady Cards

From staff reports

The Jonesboro Lady Cardinals softball team started its season later than most of the teams in the Southern Crescent.

The late started hasn't stop junior pitcher Heather Lowry from picking up right where she left off last season.

Lowry through her first two starts, Lowry has struck out 30.

Lowry could use a little offensive support. The Lady Cardinals lost the first game 1-0 to Henry County in extra innings, then beat Southwest DeKalb 1-0 on Monday.

Hard work pays off: The Lovejoy volleyball team struggled for much of last year but things are coming together this season. After beating Stockbridge and Luella Tuesday, the Lady Wildcats improved to 9-0.

Head coach Laura Granger said the turnaround has been because of the team's work ethic in practices and the work the players did during the off-season.

Henry teams ranked in state poll: Both the Stockbridge and Union Grove softball teams have moved up in this week's gafastpitch.com statewide coaches poll.

Stockbridge has moved to fourth in Class AAAA. Last week, Stockbridge was sixth.

Union Grove has moved to fourth in Class AAAAA, up from eighth last week.

"It just shows you how strong softball is here," Stockbridge head coach Randy Stracner said. "It's all about the athletes. We have the players here in the area. I'm fortunate to coach some great players here at Stockbridge."

Union Grove is currently 13-3 and got some big victories last week against Starr's Mill and Parkview.

"I wasn't expecting to move up that high but we'll take it," Union Grove head coach Brian DeBerry said.

Tough competition: The Region 3-AAAA is solid softball region both in the north and south subdivisions. The north subregion includes Griffin, Upson-Lee and all the Henry schools except for Union Grove and ELCA. The south subregion contains Hardaway, last year's Class AAAA state champion.

Stracner said playing the tough competition in the region will definitely help when the state sectionals come around.

"It's great for us," he said. "It gets us ready to play these tough teams in sectionals."

Volleyball rebound: Although the Stockbridge Tigers lost to Luella and Lovejoy in volleyball action Tuesday, the squad did salvage one match by beating Carver-Columbus 25-8 and 25-13.

Still unbeaten: The Union Grove Wolverines aren't the only undefeated football team in Henry County. They share that honor with the Mt. Vernon Crusaders. Mt. Vernon has won its first three games in easy fashion.

Friday night, they face one of the toughest games of the season when they play undefeated Colonial Hills.

The Crusaders play eight-man football in the Georgia Christian Athletic Association. Two years ago, Mt. Vernon won the GCAA state title.
