Morrow sweeps Riverdale, Mundy's Mill in area play

By Jeffery Armstrong

The Morrow Lady Mustangs volleyball team started a bit shaky, but came on strong at the end to sweep Area 2-AAAAA opponents Riverdale and Mundy's Mill Tuesday night at Riverdale High.

Morrow (13-3) had a tough time defeating the scrappy Lady Tigers of Mundy's Mill (2-4), besting them 26-24, 25-20 before taking care of the Lady Raiders of Riverdale 25-16, 25-16. Riverdale defeated Mundy's Mill 25-16, 24-26, 26-24.

In Morrow's first game against Mundy's Mill, the Lady Mustangs found themselves down 6-0 before rallying to tie the score at 15. Kill shots by Jenetra Shields and a service ace by Jordan Greenleaf were critical in Morrow's comeback. Danielle Taylor and Ashley Cogdell had kill shots for Morrow to tie the game at 20 a few minutes later, but an ace from strong server Shanice Clark of Mundy's Mill put the Lady Tigers ahead 22-21. Mundy's Mill got to game point on Morrow, 24-22, but it couldn't put the Lady Mustangs away. Shaquana Bleach's two service aces sealed the game 26-24.

Game two was close all the way, with eight ties at the start. The last tie was at 11 until Morrow went on a 9-2 run to lead 20-13. Morrow's Brittany Watson had two service aces and Greenleaf had several kill shots, thanks to nice assists from Alexis Ofodile and Tara Thornton.

Mundy's Mill rallied to get within three at 20-17, thanks to great play from Clark, Briana Turner, Artisha Bones and Jessica Wilson. But another kill shot from Greenleaf put Morrow ahead to stay and the Lady Mustangs won the game and the match, 25-20.

The atmosphere was charged for the Morrow-Riverdale match, especially since the Riverdale football and basketball players came to the gym for support. Morrow quieted the crowd early in game one, sprinting to an 8-0 lead, thanks to great serves by Thornton and a Greenleaf kill shot. Riverdale's Jessica Hill had two service aces to cut the lead to 8-4, but Hill missed her next serve and Morrow took advantage.

The Lady Mustangs went on a 7-0 run to lead 15-4 and never looked back, rolling to a 25-16 game one win. In game two, Riverdale played a bit better but still made costly mistakes that led to Morrow points.

A kill shot by Carlita Broomfield brought Mundy's Mill to 18-14, but the Lady Tigers couldn't stop Morrow, who ended up winning the game and match 25-16.

"I feel good about the wins tonight," said Ofodile, a senior. "My sets were a little off, but I got some assists to help us win and that's a good thing."
