Fight leads to shooting

An Atlanta man told police he started firing into a crowd of men who were fighting with his cousin because he thought somebody there had a gun.

Two people were wounded in the shooting, one seriously.

Montaira Blount, 21, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one charge of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Clayton County Police Capt. Jeff Turner said.

Around 10:05 p.m. Wednesday Blount and his cousin, 26-year-old Detrel Sullivan of Atlanta, were fixing Sullivan's car in front of a building in an apartment complex on Jonesboro Road near Forest Park when they noticed a fight in a large group of people nearby.

"(Sullivan) went to break it up and he got jumped," Turner said.

Blount went to Sullivan's car and got a .40 caliber handgun from the front seat. He told police that as he watched the fight he saw a gun and heard a gunshot, so he began firing at the crowd.

One of the bullets hit 19-year-old Lyndell Torres of Forest Park in the lower back. Sullivan said he heard Torres say he was shot and so Sullivan went to help him.

Torres was air-lifted to Atlanta Medical Center where he was in serious condition, Turner said.

The other person injured was a witness, 20-year-old Lamart Thompson of Forest Park, who suffered a slight injury to his big toe from one of the bullets. Turner said Thompson's injury was treated at the scene.

Two other witnesses, Diaz Thomas and DeMarcus Harris, said that another cousin of Sullivan, Thomas Ross, and another man had come tried to pick a fight with Harris earlier in the day. Thomas had said that Ross had had a gun at that time.
