ELHS girls finish unbeaten

It was senior night for the Eagle's Landing soccer teams, and both squads celebrated by playing host to county rival Union Grove in non-region matches.

In the boys' game, Eagle's Landing controlled the action in the first half, but the momentum shifted over to Union Grove in the second half, as the two squads played to a 1-all tie.

In girls' action, No. 7-ranked Eagle's Landing finished the regular-season unbeaten with a 1-0 win.

Eagle's Landing 1, Union Grove 0 (girls): The Eagle's Landing girls pretty much control their own playoff destiny. With Tuesday night's 1-0 victory, the squad closed out the regular-season schedule with a 12-0-1 record. Union Grove dropped to 6-7-2.

The Lady Golden Eagles will now play host to Central Macon Friday night in a region playoff game.

Tuesday night's victory was an impressive display of defensive soccer by both teams as Eagle's Landing goal keeper Sara Samchock and Union Grove goal keeper Elizabeth Hawkins made several key stops in the nets.

The Lady Wolverines, however, became the Lady Golden Eagles' seventh shutout victim of the season.

Eagle's Landing had several scoring chances in the first half, but the two teams went to the halftime break deadlocked at 0-0.

A first-half goal by Eagle's Landings Lauren Harris was waved off on an offsides call.

A little more than two minutes into the second half, Harris scored for real for the only goal of the game for either team.

Union Grove's Chelsea Murray made a couple of key defensive plays late in the game to keep Eagle's Landing from adding to its point total.

Eagle's Landing 1, Union Grove 1 (boys): The Eagle's Landing boys soccer team kept the pressure on Union Grove for much of the first half, and it finally paid off late as Brandon Arrington scored with less than a minute to go in the first half.

Earlier in the half, Donald Kirkland and Ryan Wallace had shots on goal in the first half, but the scoring opportunities were turned away by solid defense and the goaltending of JC Williams.

Eagle's Landing goaltender Robbie Serpas was also sharp in the nets, turning away most of the Union Grove scoring chances.

Union Grove scored its only goal when Jake Connell scored with 28:12 left in the game.
