The Jonesboro girls soccer team picked a good time to play their best game.
The Lady Cardinals clinched a third-straight trip to the Class AAAA state playoffs after cruising to a 9-1 victory over South Atlanta Wednesday in Area 5-AAAA tournament action at home.
The game was delayed for about an hour because of the weather but the Lady Cardinals didn't let that affect them. They got off to a 3-1 lead at halftime and then scored six in the second half to take the victory.
"Honestly, it's great to get back to state but watching the way they played tonight trumps everything," Jonesboro head coach Matt Trucks said. "This is the most cohesive they have played all season. I was pleased. I think they earned that (going back to state). I'm very pleased. They really stepped up, especially with the one-hour delay."
Two Lady Cardinals pulled off hat tricks as Jess Harrellson and Katie Stuart each scored three goals. Julie Farris contributed three assists and one goal while Amanda Traber score one goal and added one assist. Chelsea Black scored one goal.
Goalkeeper Brittany Brooks recorded one save.
Now the Lady Cardinals are focused on finishing first in the region tournament. Trucks said if they play like they did Wednesday, his team should be able to contend for the region title.
"We'll have to play like we did tonight," he said. "It's no cakewalk. We're going to hit difficult competition at every level. We just had a great game tonight, probably the first one we've had in about two months."
The region tournament continues next week but the schedule hasn't been finalized yet.
