Leonard E. Saunders

Mr. Leonard E. Saunders, 79, of St. Simons Island, Ga., passed away on Friday, April 15, 2005.

Memorial services will be held Monday, April 18, at 11 a.m. at McKoon's Funeral Home in Newnan, Ga.

Mr. Saunders was a native Atlantan and attended Russell High School, where he was an outstanding athlete. He played semi-pro baseball in Florence, S.C., after graduation. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific, and received an honorable discharge for his service to his country. He was employed for 35 years by National Life and Accident Insurance Company. After retiring from National Life and Accident Insurance Company, he lived in Newnan, Ga., and St. Simons Island, Ga. He was a member of White Oak Golf Club in Newnan, Ga., and Sea Palms Golf Club on St. Simons Island, Ga. He also attended St. Simons Island Community Church.

Mr. Saunders is survived by his wife of six years, T-Nell Saunders of St. Simons; his beloved three daughters, Carroll Kenney of Proctor, Mont.; Cheral Turnipseed of Atlanta and Sea Island; and Pam Cheever of Newnan, Ga., and their mother, Katherine Carroll Saunders of Atlanta. In addition he has two sons-in-law, Ben Turnipseed of Atlanta and Charles Kenney of Montana. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his former wife of 20 years, Alma Barnes of Manchester, Ga., and his grandson, Jason Paul Kenney of Dunwoody, Ga.

The family will receive friends at McKoon's Funeral Home in Newnan Sunday, April 17, from 3 to 5 p.m. The funeral will be on Monday, April 18, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Manchester, Ga. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mckoon.com.
