The Jonesboro boys and girls soccer teams have already qualified for the Class AAAA state tournament but now they're gunning for the Area 5-AAAA championship.
Both Jonesboro teams won in the first round of the area tournament last week and they're playing host to second-round action today.
The girls play Columbia at 5:30 p.m. while the boys play North Atlanta at about 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Cardinals (9-4-1) beat South Atlanta last Wednesday 9-1 in the opening round of the tournament. The victory not only propelled Jonesboro in the second round but guaranteed the Lady Cardinals their third straight trip to the state playoffs.
The Jonesboro boys (10-2-1) beat South Atlanta last Wednesday 3-1 to earn a spot in the state tournament.
Morrow's unbeaten streak ends: Going into Monday's game with Lovejoy, the Morrow boys posted a record of 14-0-1 but they dropped their first game of the season. Lovejoy (8-4-2) beat Morrow 3-0 in the non-area matchup.
The Lovejoy girls were also victorious as they beat Morrow 10-0.
Big matchup: Both the Jonesboro and Forest Park baseball teams have done well so far this season.
Jonesboro is unbeaten in sub-region play and is ranked ninth in Class AAAA in this week's gasports.com baseball poll. Jonesboro is currently in first place in the 'A' sub-region of Region 5-AAAA.
Forest Park has only one loss in sub-region play and is 10-5 overall. Forest Park is in first place in the 'B' sub-region of Region 5-AAAA.
Today, Jonesboro will play host to Forest Park at 5:30 p.m. Both teams are coming off victories Monday as Jonesboro beat Mt. Zion 15-0 while Forest Park beat Stone Mountain 10-9.
Jonesboro takes golf title: The Jonesboro golf team won the Clayton County Championship last week.
On the boys side, Justin Keebler led the way with a 48. Nick Wilson scored a 50, Amar Patel a 53, Fenil Patel a 55, Lucas Simmons a 61 and Chevy Ramdeen a 62.
Bobbi Leah led the girls with a 58 while Karie Gillette shot a 69 and Sarah Lester scored an 84.
Jonesboro tennis teams split:
The Jonesboro tennis teams split with North Clayton Tuesday.
The Jonesboro girls beat North Clayton 4-1 while the boys lost 4-1.
In girls singles, Anka Van Wyck won 8-5 and Joan Nguyen won 8-0.
In girls doubles, Kristian Larsen and Jackie Nguyen won 8-5 while Kayla Daniels and Britney Blackwell won 8-0.
The Region 5-AAAA tennis tournament starts today at 10 a.m. at the Atlanta Beach.
The Jonesboro girls are seeded third and the boys are seeded fourth.
