The Mundy's Mill boys and girls basketball teams rolled Tuesday night at home with a pair of blow-out victories over Union Grove.
The boys won 69-29 while the girls won 61-38 in Region 4-AAAAA action.
BOYS: Mundy's Mill (12-2) came into the contest with some momentum after winning a holiday tournament at Salem High School. In the Salem tournament, Mundy's Mill upset Shiloh in the semifinals and beat Avondale in the finals.
"We feel good about how things went over the Christmas break but it means nothing now that the region has started," Mundy's Mill head coach Tu Willingham said. "Obviously, we're excited and we have the attitude of being guardedly optimistic right now."
In Tuesday's game, Union Grove led 5-0 early but the rest of the game belonged to Mundy's Mill. Mundy's Mill led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter, 36-13 at the half and 57-21 at the end of the third quarter.
Kent Dorsey and Brandon Robinson led Mundy's Mill with 15 each while Corey Kimbro added 13.
Greg Williams led Union Grove with seven points.
"We've struggled offensively and defense has really been our strength. Defense has been key for us this year," Willingham said. "We need to put more points on the board to win."
Mundy's Mill gets back into action Friday at Newnan.
"We travel to Newnan on Friday and I've seen many teams go to Newnan on Fridays and come back with a loss so we have to be ready," Willingham said.
GIRLS: Christian Hunnicutt led Mundy's Mill with 22 points and Kim Jackson added nine points.
Kendra Lee led Union Grove with 12 points.
The game was close early and as the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, Kayla Porter scored a basket to give Union Grove a 15-14 lead.
Early in the second quarter, Mundy's Mill reclaimed the lead when Essence Brown made a 3-pointer, giving the Lady Tigers a 17-15 advantage. Mundy's Mill extended its lead to 37-25 at the half and 51-35 at the end of the third quarter. Mundy's Mill outscored Union Grove 10-3 in the final quarter.
Forest Park 38, Mt. Zion 26 (girls): The Forest Park girls won their fifth straight to improve their record to 7-7. Marcquitta Head led Forest Park wih 19 points while Ashauntae Bussey led Mt. Zion with nine.
Local players honored: Jonesboro's Jasmine Duffey, North Clayton's Ashley Johnson and Morrow's Jordan Greenleaf have been named to the Atlanta Tip-Off Club Girls' High School Team of the Month. Stockbridge's Markel Humphrey was named to the Boys' High Schoiol Team of the Month.
