A 7-year-old boy was mauled in his own back yard by a dog that was being kept at his house.
The boy, whose name was not released by police, had returned from school to his house on Woodbridge Drive near Riverdale around 4 p.m. when the attack occurred, Clayton County Police Capt. Jeff Turner said. A dog belonging to the boy's family and two pit bull terriers who had been kept at the house for about two weeks, one of which was the dog that attacked the boy, were in the back yard.
The two visiting dogs were on a leash.
"The child went into the back yard to take them off the hook when one of the dogs mauled him," Turner said.
No adults were home at the time of the attack. The boy managed to get away from the dog and went across the street to a neighbor's house where help was summoned.
Suffering from injuries to his face, head, arms and legs, the boy was taken by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
