Lovejoy edges Starr's Mill as the team to beat in Region 4-AAAAA football this season
Head football coaches from Region 4-AAAAA and members of the local media picked Lovejoy as the team to beat in that region this year, although only a mere point separates the Wildcats from the Starr's Mill Panthers.
Lovejoy, coming off back-to-back region titles, picked up seven of 11 first-place votes and edged second place Starr's Mill in overall points, 69-68.
The coaches and media met last Thursday morning at the Orchard Hills Golf Course in Newnan for the annual pre-season media day where coaches talked about their teams and the ballots cast.
Like last season, Region 4-AAAAA has seven member schools including East Coweta, Fayette County, Lovejoy, Mundy's Mill, Newnan, Starr's Mill and Union Grove.
With the recent re-classification process conducted by the Georgia High School Association (GHSA), the region will take on a whole new look beginning with the 2006 season, but these teams will do battle when the 2005 season kicks off August 19.
In the voting among five head coaches and six media representatives on Thursday, Lovejoy and Starr's Mill got the top votes followed by East Coweta in third place with 51 points, Mundy's Mill was fourth with 40 total points.
The remaining teams were Newnan (35 pts.), Union Grove (27 pts.) and Fayette Co. (18 pts.).
The top four teams in the region qualify for the state playoffs.
Coaches casting ballots included Al Hughes (Lovejoy), Robert Herring (Newnan), Danny Cronic (East Coweta) and Mike McDonald (Union Grove). Voting from the media were Jay Stone of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; Cindy Morley of the Fayette Daily News and Today in Peachtree City; Stuart Crosby of the Newnan Times-Herald; Dan McDuffie of Magic 98.1 Radio; Tray Baggarly of the East Coweta Journal; and Anthony Rhoads formerly of the News-Daily and Daily Herald papers in Clayton and Henry counties.
