Clerk shot in robbery

A 23-year-old employee at a Jonesboro dry cleaner may lose both his eyes after being shot during a robbery Tuesday.

The employee was manning the counter at the American One-Hour Cleaner in the Kroger shopping center at North Avenue and Tara Boulevard around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday when two armed men entered, according to Clayton County Police Capt. Jeff Turner. The men, described only as black males, then demanded money.

"For unknown reasons, maybe he wasn't fast enough, one of the assailants opened fire on (the employee)," Turner said.

The bullet hit the victim, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, in the face and appeared to have punctured at least one eye. After the two robbers grabbed some money from the register and ran from the store, the employee staggered outside and made it as far as the Empire of China restaurant next door.

Restaurant employees called 911 and the victim was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
