Kiwanis club gets motivated

By Ed Brock

Alpharetta-based motivational speaker Dave Kelly had some words of wisdom sweetened with humor for the Kiwanis Club of Southlake.

There are three types of people, Kelly told club members during their Tuesday meeting at Pilgreens restaurant in Morrow, the optimist, the pessimist and the "Must-have-missed-s."

An optimist sees a glass of water that is half full, a pessimist sees the same glass as half empty, but the "Must-have-missed" person says "Glass? What glass?"

"These are the kind of people who, when opportunity knocks, they aren't home," Kelly said.

Kelly, who is also a stand-up comedian and creator of the "Building Leaders Through Service" program that seeks to instill leadership skills in students, also talked about using his own advice to start his current career.

For 20 years Kelly worked as a mortgage broker then realized that that wasn't the career he had envisioned for himself.

"I'd always envisioned myself in front of an audience," Kelly said.

So, in keeping with his speaking point "The key to pursuing opportunity is you have to begin," Kelly made a career change and became a motivational speaker.

"None of that would have happened if I hadn't started," Kelly said.
