Local hoopsters go camping

From staff reports

The Summer Camp season is off and running at Clayton State University with a number of camps ongoing through the school's Athletics Department.

The Clayton State men's basketball program recently concluded its first High School Shootout and Middle School Team Camp and will host a High School Team Camp next week.

"We've had another outstanding response to our team camps this year," said fifth-year Clayton State head coach Gordon Gibbons. "The support and enthusiasm for our team camps continue to grow each year."

In last weekend's High School Shootout, North Clayton and Lithonia each finished with 7-0 marks, followed by South Atlanta with a 5-3 record. Heritage, Morrow and North Atlanta all had 4-3 marks, while Mt. Zion finished even at 4-4.

Other teams in the Shootout were Chamblee, Walker, Cross Keys, Henry County, Wenonah, Forest Park and Monticello.

In last week's third annual Middle School Camp, Babb finished with a perfect 7-0 mark, followed by Henry County at 4-3 record.

Along with Babb and Henry, the camp featured six other teams, two from Mundy's Mill and one each from Woodward, Adamson and Monticello.

"We had another good week of Middle School Team Camp," said Gibbons. "Our Middle School Team Camp has been a hit the last few years, and we will continue to build on its success."

Clayton State's Middle School Camp is unique in the Atlanta area. It is designed to give middle schools in and around the greater Atlanta area an opportunity to play 6-to-8 full-lengthened games during a time when team camps normally focus only on the high school level.

Next week, Clayton State will host its first boy's week-long High School Team Camp, running from June 12-16 . Games will tip off at 4:30 p.m. and be at four different sites. Teams will play at Clayton State, Babb Middle, Forest Park High and Morrow High School.

State powers Norcross High, Dunwoody, Westlake and Griffin are among the 40 teams that invade the Southern Crescent to compete along with local squad's in Morrow, North Clayton, Forest Park and Starr's Mill.

Individual day camps: Clayton State Athletics will be offering a number of individual camps next week, including a boys basketball camp, running from June 13-17. In addition, the school is offering a half-day tennis camp in the morning next week and a half-day soccer camp and a half-day speed development camp in the afternoon. The men's soccer program will be offering a striker/goalkeeper camp next week, and the next girls basketball individual camp will be from June 20-24.
