CCSU runners competing at NCAAs

Clayton State University sprinters Eric Simmons and Brian Etelman will compete in the NCAA Division II National Track & Field Championships on Thursday and Friday in Abilene, TX.

Both Etelman and Simmons were selected for the national meet at Abilene Christian University's Elmer Gray Stadium, after qualifying in the 200m and 400m events, respectively.

Simmons will run on Thursday at 6:50 p.m. (ET), while Etelman will compete on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Simmons holds this year's 11th fastest time in the 400m and will be one of 21 participants in three heats. Etelman will enter the 200m race on Friday with the eighth fastest time and be one of 24 runners also in three heats.

The winner's of the three heats, plus the next six finishers advance to the finals on Saturday with the top eight finishers in the finals receiving All-America honors. A sophomore from Carrollton.

Simmons is competing in the 400m at nationals for the second straight year. He qualified for this year's meet with a school record time of 47.12 at the Georgia Invitational in Athens, GA.

Last year, Simmons placed 16th in the 400m as a freshman. Etelman, a junior from Marietta, GA, qualified for the meet with a school record time of 21.08 earlier this season at the Georgia meet.

Earlier this year, he provisionally qualified in the 200m at the 2005 Indoor NCAA Division II National Championships in Boston, MA, and competed in the 60m at the indoor nationals. Both Etelman and Simmons were members of the last year's All-America 4x400m relay team that placed sixth in the country at the 2004 national meet in California.

Clayton State's appearance in the 2005 national meet marks the fourth time in the last five years that the eight-year program has been represented at the Division II National Championships.

Last year's sixth place finish by the 4x400m relay team is the highest finish for Clayton State at the outdoor national meet, while senior Carlos Guyton finished fourth at the 2005 NCAA Division II indoor meet earlier this year, being named an All-America.
