Fire destroys house in Rex

The fire that destroyed his neighbor's house burned vivid memories into the mind of 11-year-old Daniel Grasimov.

“Just a fire, big flames,” Grasimov said in describing the blaze that erupted on Chalice Way Tuesday evening. “I saw the firefighters trying to put it out but it was just huge.”

The fire began just after 5 p.m. at the house that soon became fully involved, Clayton County Fire Department Spokeswoman Amy Nix said.

Nix said nobody was injured.

“There were people on the scene but they evacuated before we got there,” Nix said.

The American Red Cross came in to help find temporary shelter for the residents of the home.

Camille Trott, another neighbor on Chalice Way, said a couple and their baby as well as another adult relative lived in the house.

Nix said the cause of the blaze was still under investigation.

Trott said she was at work when it began and somebody called her to tell her what happened. She had to park her car at the end of the cul-de-sac and walk into the neighborhood where the fire was still burning.

“It looked like there was a lot of fire coming out of the back of the house,” Trott said. “The house is just gone.”

More than three hours later Trott was still waiting for an opportunity to retrieve her car as firefighters continued to extinguish hot spots.

The exact size and value of the house was unknown but it was very large. The fire was contained to the one home.
