Christmas parade set for Nov. 19

In all the rush of the holiday season, don't forget the Christmas parade in Jonesboro next Saturday (Nov. 19).

It is always the Saturday before Thanksgiving and designed to kick off the holiday season. As usual the jolly ole elf, Santa, will be one lof the highlights for kids.

The Home Parade and Main Street Festival is always the Saturday before Thanksgiving, this annual event kicks off the holiday season. Last year 78 entries and nearly 1700 folks participated in this holiday tradition, while thousands more watched all along the route! Mr. Truett Cathy, the parade host, and founder of Chick-fil-A, will again serve as the honorary Grand Marshall.

Well-known gardener and local TV/radio celebrity, Walter Reeves will join the fun this year and be a featured parade participant. Walter is the weekly WSB radio talk show host of The Lawn and Garden Show. He is also the author of numerous gardening books, a weekly newspaper columnist, and regular show host on Turner South, DIY Network's “Garden Sense”, and GPTV's “Gardening in Georgia”.

“Holiday Traditions and Memories" is this year's parade theme. Awards will be given for the best of parade, best use of theme, most artistic and colorful, best performance, having greatest community impact, and having the greatest audience appeal. This year for the first time, Arts Clayton has announced that monetary awards will be given to winning entries in addition to the traditional ribbons! Following the parade and day's festivities, a street dance will complete the scene after the parade and lighting of the tree on the lawn of the historic courthouse.

The City of Jonesboro will again host the day-long street festival along Main Street with booths featuring thousands of gifts & crafts plus food, fun and entertainment for everyone. The Arts Clayton Gallery, located at 136 South Main Street, will host its annual Mistletoe Market, including gift items of original art at affordable prices for everyone on your list!

Presented by Arts Clayton, Clayton County, the City of Jonesboro, and thanks to the annual sponsorship of Heritage Bank, the parade brings together civic organizations, schools, churches, businesses and local agencies for this community-wide celebration. The parade features floats, high school marching bands, ROTC units, community groups and organizations, fire trucks, vintage cars, police and fire safety vehicles. Special celebrity Mr. Santa Claus is expected to make an appearance at the end of the parade.

The Coldwell Banker Bullard Realty float will again host the United States Marine Corp and their Toys for Tots holiday campaign. Parade goers may donate to this cause by bringing a new unwrapped toy to the Arts Clayton Gallery at 136 S. Main Street in downtown Jonesboro on or before parade day.

The Parade steps off at 4:30 pm and begins at the intersection of McDonough Street and Stockbridge Road (old 138 Hwy) and proceeds north to the Confederate Cemetery, crosses the railroad tracks and then turns south along Main Street to the Clayton County Courthouse.
