A carjacking led to a series of gang-related drive-by shootings in a Jonesboro apartment complex over the weekend.
The initial incident occurred around 7 p.m. Sunday near the basketball court at Highland Vista apartments on Arrowhead Boulevard when Terris Williams, 19, of Morrow was parked nearby, according to Clayton County police reports. A man who was with Williams said four unknown men got out of two cars, approached somebody in a black Ford Mustang and fired three shots at them.
It is unknown if the people in the black Mustang were hit because they were gone before officers arrived.
After that shooting, all four men approached Williams, put the gun to his head and told him to get out of the car. When Williams and the other man got out of the car the four got into Williams' 1997 silver Ford Crown Victoria and left. Police found three 9mm shell casings and one of the bullets had entered the glass door of a nearby apartment, hitting the wall. No one was injured in that apartment.
About one hour later witnesses saw a group of 10 to 15 young men leave an apartment in the complex and get into three vehicles, a black Nissan Altima, a white car and a black or dark red car. The white car and the dark-colored car drove off but the Altima stopped in front of a building and somebody inside the Altima fired several rounds at the building before driving off.
Again, some shells were found in the parking lot but nobody was hit and no property damage was reported.
An hour after that at 9:15 p.m. a woman living at the complex reported hearing gunfire and said a bullet came through her upstairs bedroom window. The window was broken but the officer responding to the call could not find a bullet.
The woman told police she saw a black Ford Explorer speed away after the shooting. An officer stopped the Explorer nearby but the occupants got out and ran and were not captured.
Clayton County Assistant Police Chief Jeff Turner said the shootings are believed to be related to gang activity but he did not know what gang.
No arrests had been made late Monday. If you have any information, please call the authorities.
