From Staff Reports
The Clayton State men's basketball program opened its season last week with a big win and has some big news to announce in the signing of a junior college All-American during the November early signing period.
Clayton State has signed Costal Georgia Community College All-American Will Shackleford to a letter of intent for the 2006-07 season. Shackleford, a 6-foot-5, 225 lb. power forward, averaged 22 points and 15 rebounds last year for the Costal Georgia in his freshman season, en route to being named a NJCAA All-America.
A native of Andrews, SC, Shackleford will play again for the school in Brunswick and enter Clayton State in the fall of 2006. Costal Georgia is the preseason favorite to win the Georgia Junior Athletic Association and is ranked sixth in the nation. He was also a Street's & Smith and NJCAA preseason All-America this year.
"Will has developed his game in junior college and has become a force in the low post area," said head coach Gordon Gibbons, one of the winningest coaches at the NCAA Division II level. "His ability to score and rebound will be an excellent compliment to the skills of our returning players."
The only freshman on the first or second team NJCAA All-American list last year, Shackleford has started this season where he left off last year. He is averaging 23 points and 14 rebounds per game, shooting 65 percent from the field in four early wins for Costal.
Shackleford is the third junior college All-American that the Clayton State program has signed in the last three years. Former forward B.J. Puckett was a junior college All-America signee in 2003 and current Laker guard Todd McLaurin was a junior college All-America signee last spring.
Clayton State opened its season last week with a 104-48 rout of Tuskegee. The Lakers will return to action on Tuesday traveling to play the Golden Tigers in Tuskegee, AL before returning home on Saturday for game against Bluefield College. Tip-off for Saturday's game at the Athletics & Fitness Center is 7:30 p.m.
