The Jonesboro High School volleyball team has experienced a lot of joy this season. The Lady Cardinals, ranked No. 9 in the final state volleyball poll, began the season with 25 straight victories and finished 32-2, with a 5 p.m. game Wednesday at home against Forest Park in the Area Championship. But Jonesboro coach Dan Maehlman said he hasn't been pleased with the team's performance. “I don't know if we deserve to be ranked ninth,” Maehlman said. “We haven't reached our potential yet and I don't think during the course of the year that we have improved.” The Lady Cardinals, after Wednesday's game against Forest Park, play in the Class AAAA state tournament, which begins Oct. 29. Jonesboro will either meet Woodward or McIntosh in the opening round. Jonesboro's two losses came to Sandy Creek (Oct. 6), 2-0, and Columbus (Oct. 13), 2-1. “Right now, we just want to go out in the tournament and compete with those teams,” Maehlman said. “We just don't have a leader at this point. When you get to the tournament, it is the top 16 teams left in the state and they eat, drink and sleep volleyball.” The tournament will be at either, Salem or Clark Central.More like this story
