Riverdale lights up Douglass

The Riverdale Raiders defeated two opponents Friday night at Lakewood Stadium when they defeated the Douglass Astros 21-12 and overcame two delays in the game because of lightening.

The field was cleared the first time with only 10:18 to go in the first quarter and lasted about 45 minutes.

When play resumed Riverdale dominated the Astros the entire first half scoring 21 points and limiting Douglass to zero points, 37 total yards and only one first down.

Senior quarterback Tim Johnson got Riverdale on the scoreboard first with three minutes to go in the first quarter on a one yard run.

The touchdown finished off a 57-yard drive that took nine plays over 4:51.After the extra point by Abdul Cole Riverdale led 7-0.

After recovering a Douglass fumble at the 8 yardline Riverdale would score again on a 3- yard touchdown run by Mario Swann with only 29 seconds to go in the first quarter giving Riverdale a 14-0 lead.

The Raiders closed out their scoring in the first half with a 4 yard touchdown run by junior Chad Morgan capping off a 4-play, 44-yard drive with 8:58 to go in the second quarter. Morgan finished the night with 105 yards rushing against a very tough Douglass.

Head coach Nick Davis was very pleased with the way his team bounced back after losing to Tri-Cities last week. "Somebody told me last week that losing to Tri-Cities may have been a blessing in disguise. I don't know about that, but it definately caused us to get refocused."

Riverdale will finish the regular season next Saturday night at Tara Stadium against Stephenson in a matchup of the top-two teams in Region 2-AAAAA. The winner moves on to the state playoffs as the No.1 seed from the region.
