Man killed in drive-by shooting

By Ed Brock

Clayton County police are still looking for evidence with which to charge four suspects in the drive-by shooting that killed a Marietta man as his 1-year-old child sat in a car nearby.

Brian Carney, 24, was visiting two female friends on Mockingbird Trail near Jonesboro around 11:26 p.m. Friday when the shooting occurred, said Clayton County Assistant Police Chief Jeff Turner.

"He was washing clothes because he was preparing to go out of town to visit relatives," Turner said.

Carney had put his child in the car and returned to the porch when three cars came down the road in front of the house.

"One of the suspects in the middle car leaned out of the window and fired approximately 10 shots at the house," Turner said.

One of the shots hit Carney in the hip. He was taken to Southern Regional Medical Center where he died from his injury.

A short time later an officer in the area saw a white vehicle that matched the description of the car from which the shots were fired. When the officer tried to stop the car, Turner said, the driver, 17-year-old Deon McKinley, fled.

The chase ended when the car came to a dead end road and McKinley and his three passengers, all juveniles, got out and ran. They were all caught and detained.

Turner said the car had been stolen from a QT gas station near Jonesboro three hours before the shooting but no gun was found in the car.

"There wasn't enough evidence to tie them in with the shooting," Turner said.

McKinley is being held on the theft by taking of an motor vehicle charge. Turner said the investigation is continuing.

"We're going to be talking to them again really soon," Turner said.
