A young Riverdale man is fighting for his life after being shot in a struggle with two gunmen who had forced their way into the victim's apartment.
Chris Dangvan, 19, of Laurel Park was in surgery at Atlanta Medical Center Thursday evening for a gunshot wound to the chest. Meanwhile, a suspect in the case was at Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale with bullet wounds in his leg that may have come from the same incident.
As of 7 p.m. Thursday detectives were still interviewing that man, 23-year-old Christopher Mallory, and no charges had been made against him, Clayton County Assistant Police Chief Jeff Turner said.
Around 4:37 p.m. Dangvan and three other people were in Dangvan's residence in Laurel Park Apartments on Ga. Highway 85 when another friend knocked on the door, Turner said. One of the people in the apartment went to open the door.
"The two gunmen ran up behind (the friend at the door) and shoved their way in," Turner said.
The gunmen demanded money but Dangvan struggled with them. During that struggle one of the gunmen shot him in the chest and the other gunman was also shot in the leg, possibly by the same gun.
Turner said three bullet holes were in the wall of the apartment and a shotgun blast was found over the door.
After the shooting the gunmen went out the door, got into a Toyota van and drove away.
"I heard a shot and saw a dude that came out limping," one young witness said.
A short time after the shooting Mallory came to SRMC claiming he was walking on Welcome All Road when somebody shot him for no reason, Turner said. A white van was found in the parking lot of the hospital and shotgun was found in the seat.
As the helicopter ambulance lifted off to fly Dangvan to Atlanta Medical Center a young man ran to the edge of the landing field and watched in obvious distress as it flew away. Later the man, who would not give his name, said he was a friend of the victim and had been walking with him a short time before the shooting.
"I'm wanting to see his face," the man said.
