Jonesboro police caught a registered sex offender knocking on doors late at night. Jonesboro Police Sgt. Brian Fornel stopped 38-year-old Samuel Eugene Bartley around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday walking near Huie Street and Fayetteville Road after complaints that a man had been knocking on doors in the area. "Basically he was knocking on doors asking for money," said Sgt. Wayne Woods. At first Bartley told Fornel that his name was Eugene Porter, so he was arrested on charges of loitering and prowling. A fingerprint check later revealed Bartley's real name and that he was a registered sex offender from Chattanooga. Now Bartley is also charged with giving a false name to police officers. Woods said he isn't sure if Bartley was looking for a victim during the incident, but Bartley did ask one woman who answered her door to him if her husband was home. "If somebody's knocking on doors that late at night they need to go ahead and call the police," Woods said.More like this story
