Eagle's Landing Christian Academy took care of business, sending a charge through the Spartans winning 25-20 in game one in the season opener Tuesday at ELCA.

Athens came back in the second set, but the Lady Chargers won the finale 25-13.

Eagle's Landing Christian Academy will play at Luella on Aug. 20 followed by games with Dutchtown, Whitewater and Union Grove on Aug. 23.

The Lady Chargers next home game takes place on Aug. 30 versus Decatur.

The eighth-ranked Jonesboro Lady Cardinals ushered in the 2007 volleyball season with flying colors as they defeated Athens Academy and Eagle's Landing Christian Academy at ELCA to open up with a 2-0 record.

JHS blew past Athens Academy in two games winning 25-15 in each outing.

In the nightcap, the Lady Cardinals took on cross-county neighbor ELCA for local bragging rights. JHS won two-of-three versus the Chargers taking the first game 25-14.

The Lady Cards dropped the next match 25-14, which brought the healthy ELCA crowd to its feet. However, all hopes for an upset flew out the window after JHS opened up to a 5-1 lead in the third game.

JHS compiled a huge lead and never looked back as they won in the finale 25-17.

"We've built a pretty good tradition here at Jonesboro," said JHS head coach Dan Maehlman. "These girls don't like to lose. We've been to the state playoffs six-out-of-seven years.

This was the just the first two games and we've got a long way to go."

The Lady Cards used their height and athleticism to cruise past Athens Academy and ELCA.

Senior outside hitter and team co-capatin Shanice Smith was a towering force at the net, blocking several shots and spiking the ball hard at ELCA's defense, knocking players down hard to the floor.

On Aug. 21 JHS travels to Lee County for a three-team series where they'll face off against the Trojans followed by a match up with Americus-Sumter.

From there, they'll suit up versus St. Pius X on Aug. 25 before heading back to the neighborhood to play Stockbridge Aug. 28 in their home debut.
