Vernon J. Smelley

Nan Gardner Brown

Nan Gardner Brown, 89, of Locust Grove, died Dec. 5, at the Henry Medical Center. Mrs. Brown was born in Spalding County, the daughter of the late Lula Gaillard Gardner and Samuel Howell Gardner, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clifford Brown, Jr., brother, John Gardner, and sisters, Bernice Gardner Brown and Lula Gardner Thomas.

Survivors are her children, Betty and Rod Shearouse, of Locust Grove, Jane and John Lute, of Locust Grove, and Lynn and David Holt, of Carrolton; grandchildren, Sam and Sandy Shearouse, Cliff and Sandi Shearouse, Ben and Anna Shearouse, Gil and Kristi Shearouse, Margaret and Kevin Livingston, Rachel and Dan Devitt, Colleen and Chris Watts, Judith and Kevin Randolph, Will Holt, and Daniel Holt; 21 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Howell and Ann Gardner, of Locust Grove; sister-in-law June Gardner Elkins, of Locust Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Brown enjoyed music, quilting, needlework, gardening, reading, and cooking. She graduated from McDonough High School, class of 1935. She received her bachelor's degree from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, where she was soprano soloist in the A Cappella Choir. She also studied at the Juilliard School of Music, New York. She received a master's degree in education supervision from the University of Georgia. She was a lifelong member of Locust Grove First Baptist Church, where she was choir and music director for 35-plus years; and taught the Gleaners Sunday School Class for 40 years. She taught voice at GSCW, at Chickamauga, Ga, and Fountain Inn, S.C. She was music supervisor for the Henry County Board of Education, taught private and public school voice and piano, worked as an Air Traffic Controller during WWII, taught school in Locust Grove and worked as a county visiting teacher for Henry County.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who enjoyed life and being around her family and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Brown will be Saturday, Dec. 8, 2 p.m., at Locust Grove First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Craig Bowers and Rev. Kenny Heath officiating. Interment will be in the Locust Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, from 4-7 p.m. Those who wish, in lieu of flowers, may make donations to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, c/o First Baptist Church of Locust Grove. Robbie Tillman

Mr. Robbie Tillman, of Forest Park, passed away Dec. 4, 2007 at the age of 47. Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m., at Forest Lawn Memorial Garden in College Park, with interment to follow. Robbie is survived by his sisters, Frances Boswell and husband, Chuck, Connie Halligan and husband, Barry; nephews, Jason and Tiffany Glover, Todd Halligan and Taylor Halligan; great-nephew, Everett Glover.
