Fire Station Eight, at 6700 Maddox Road has been reopened following an eight-month renovation.
Capt. Landry Merkison announced the reopening of the Morrow fire station recently and said the refurbishing of Fire Station Five, at 2135 Walt Stephens Road in Jonesboro is expected to be complete in a few weeks.
The renovations involved expanding the buildings and updating the stations to meet current safety practices, and the needs of modern firefighters. The renovation of Station Eight cost $520,182. Station Five will cost $418,751.
The stations are the Clayton County Fire Department's oldest, and now meet the standards of the department's newest stations.
Chief Alex Cohilas said the renovations will enable the stations to house more equipment and more personnel.
During renovations, the buildings were closed, and their response areas were served by the nearest of the county's 11 other stations.
Merkison said the department plans to hold an open house, allowing citizens to see the "new" fire houses, in the middle of January.
