Impressive 2006 squads hitting the courts hard again in '07

The Jonesboro basketball teams are off to fast starts after winning the McIntosh State Bank Tip-off Tournaments Saturday at Union Grove High School.

In boys action, Jonesboro knocked off Union Grove in the finals 60-50 behind Brandon Hosley's 18 points. Hosley was named the MVP of the tournament.

A year ago, the Cardinals made it to the Class AAAA Elite 8.

In girls action, Jonesboro defeated Salem to win the girls' half of the tournament. The Lady Cardinals' Dramecka Griggs was named the girls MVP.

Both Jonesboro teams will take the momentum from the holiday tournament into tonight's home game against Central Gwinnett.

The girls' game tips off at 6 p.m. and the boys game starts at 7:30.

High-flying Lady Eagles: The North Clayton Lady Eagles had plenty to celebrate after winning the Brown Arrowhead Tournament at Morrow this weekend. The Lady Eagles took care of business with victories over Tucker, Lanier (Ala), Clarke Central and Heritage in the tournament finals.

The Lady Eagles' Latia Williams was named tournament MVP. North Clayton's Crystal Nwapara was on the all-tournament team.

A year ago, the Lady Eagles advanced to the Class AAAA Final Four.

Best of the best: A year ago, the Riverdale Raiders and North Clayton Eagles each made it to the Class AAAA Final Four.

Both teams are expected to make another run at the title again this year.

North Clayton came into the preseason ranked fifth in the gasports.com Class AAAA coaches' poll.

In the Brown Arrowhead Clinic Tournament at Morrow this weekend, North Clayton beat Lovejoy 68-56 for its first victory of the year.

On Saturday, North Clayton takes its show to Phillips Arena for a game against Sandy Creek starting at 2:30 p.m.

Riverdale entered the season ranked sixth in the Class AAAA poll.

The Raiders are scheduled to renew their rivalry at Mundy' Mill on Friday.

Eagle's Landing Christian is ranked eighth in the Class A preseason poll. The Chargers knocked off Ola in a game earlier this year. The Chargers play host to Greenforest Christian in a Region 5A-A contest tonight.

Old-fashion rivalry: Several teams in Henry County will renew county rivalries tonight when Eagle's Landing plays host to Dutchtown, Stockbridge travels to Henry County, Luella travels to Woodland.
