Burglars hit police uniform store, steal body armor

Bulletproof vests, watches, sunglasses and a mannequin went missing from a uniform supply store, in what appears to be a smash-and-grab burglary.

Jonesboro Police found the front window smashed at T & T Uniforms South, the 285 North Main Street store that provides the county's police uniforms.

The store owner told detectives he locked the place up on Sunday night, but found the broken glass scattered around the inside and outside of the strip-center shop on Monday, when he opened up at 6:30 a.m.

Clayton County Police responded to the scene to take fingerprints, found on the glass, and samples of the small amount of blood found there.

Jonesboro Police said a large landscaping stone looked like it had been used to smash the window.

According to the police report, two Kevlar body-armor vests, valued at $2,710 and $1,030, were missing. The burglars also apparently took an equipment bag, watches valued at $650, $1,200, and $625, and sunglasses valued at $850, $370, and one pair, with a built-in MP3 player, valued at $350. The burglars also stole a mannequin, according to the Jonesboro police report.

The owner told police he suspects two men, who came into the store a day or so before the burglary, asking about sunglasses and bulletproof vests. He said the men were black, according to the police report. One was about six-feet, five-inches tall and wore a gold grill in his mouth. The other was about five-foot-eight.

The two didn't buy anything, but left in a burgundy-colored, 1993 Buick Regal.

Detective Sgt. Tim Jessup said the Jonesboro Police Department is following a number of solid leads and the investigation may connect to other incidents in Clayton and Spalding counties.

It was not clear, Wednesday, if the items were stolen to resell, or, if the burglars intended to use the bulletproof vests, watches, sunglasses and mannequin for something else.

Anyone with information about the burglary or the stolen items, is asked to call Jonesboro Police at (770) 478-4707.
