A dispute at a bus stop Friday morning landed an Ola High School student in the hospital and an Ola Middle School student in juvenile custody.

The incident occurred around 8 a.m., at a bus stop at Grove Park Drive and Lilac Drive. According to Locust Grove Police Sgt. Alvin Bearden, an 11-year-old boy hit another boy, age 14, in the head with a hammer.

"The investigation showed that there was an ongoing dispute between the two, with some gang overtones," he said.

The 11-year-old was charged in Henry County Juvenile Court with aggravated assault Friday afternoon, Bearden said. He said additional charges may be forthcoming, depending on whether the bus stop is considered school property.

He said the incident was "not a random act," and that the two children had had disputes between them for some time. He said the incident should not be taken as an indication that children in the area aren't safe at bus stops.

School spokesman, Tony Pickett, said Friday that the school system will investigate the matter, and will follow school procedures as if the incident had occurred on school property.

The victim was treated and released from Henry Medical Center Friday.
