18-year old fatally shot in robbery attempt

The tide turned quickly against two alleged armed robbers at a MetroPCS cellular phone store in Forest Park on Monday night.

While at least one of the robbery suspects is still at-large, an 18-year-old from Decatur was killed in a gun battle that ensued between the suspects and a MetroPCS employee.

Tyrie Rolland, of Decatur, was shot in the head. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Just before 8 p.m., on Monday night, police said Rolland, and an accomplice, entered the MetroPCS store at 4047 Jonesboro Road and allegedly tried to rob the store as two employees were about to close.

Before the suspects could get away with any valuables, one of the employees and the robbers exchanged gunfire.

Major Chris Matson, with the Forest Park Police Department, said from what police know, Rolland was the only person who suffered any injuries. The second suspect fled in a white pick-up truck.

Matson said the police are currently reviewing surveillance tapes and looking for a possible third suspect, who may have served as a getaway driver.

He said the police have a "rather vague description" of the suspects.

"The manner in which they were dressed was not very revealing," said Matson. "Nothing [about their clothing] stands out."

Anyone having any information regarding the robbery, is asked to contact Detective Sgt. K. Henry at (404) 608-2367, ext. 701.
