History repeated itself Friday night between region 4-AAAAA and county girls basketball rivals Morrow and Mundy's Mill.
With first place at stake, Morrow outscored Mundy's Mill 20-9 in the final quarter, breaking open a 39-39 tie and giving the Lady Mustangs a 59-48 victory, delighting the home crowd.
For the second-straight year, both teams entered their first encounter of the season with unbeaten region records. And for the second- straight year, Morrow took the first round.
Chatel Bradford dominated the post play, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 second-half rebounds, pacing the winning Lady Mustangs (12-4, 6-0). Point guard Morgan Goss added 13 points, including 11-of-12 shooting from the free throw line.
With the game tied at 39, Morrow jumped out to a 9-2 run and never looked back, started by four points from Maleshia Chandler.
The Lady Mustangs also closed the game with an 8-2 run, with Bradford dishing to Benee Norton for two of her nine points on the night beginning the final run. Desiree Wilson also contributed eight points on the evening.
"It was tough all night," winning coach Yolanda Jenkins said. "We fought back and stretched it out. This is a good group of girls to coach. The key is getting them to accept their roles."
Mundy's Mill (14-2, 5-1) was led by Brittney Strickland with 12 points and Larissa Carter added 10. Tandrea High and Timethia Bennett added nine and eight points respectively.
"Their physical style was a lot to handle," coach Lonnie Farmer mentioned. "But the girls grew up out there. They're getting better."
Morrow outscored Mundy's Mill 33-18 in the second half after the visiting Lady Tigers took a 30-26 halftime lead.
Coach Jenkins mentioned that the Morrow-Mundy's Mill rivalry continues to build and she looks forward to the future of the rivalry since both teams will play for two more years in the same region starting next year.
Mundy's Mill 69, Morrow 56: Visiting Mundy's Mill (13-1, 5-1) scored the first 10 points of the game and coasted to the region win over Morrow (8-8, 2-4) in boys action..
Dennis Harris dominated again with a 25-point, 16-rebound effort. Adam Smith contributed 16 points and six boards and Todd Salter and Jarius Brown added 10 points apiece. Brown also had seven rebounds and Harris had four blocks. Mike Allen added eight points.
Josh Davis led Morrow with 12 points, six coming in the final quarter. Donte Williams added 10 points, eight coming in the final quarter. He also had nine rebounds and four blocks. Sean Stringfellow contributed 11 points.
Smith and Harris combined for 18 of Mundy's Mill's 28 points in the fourth quarter, as both teams combined for 50 points in the final quarter.
Mundy's Mill travels to Riverdale and Morrow plays Lovejoy in county contests today.
