Morrow library branch to celebrate world music

Monday

The Clayton County Board of Education will hold its July business meeting on Monday, July 14, at 7 p.m., in the recital hall at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center, 2530 Mt. Zion Parkway, Jonesboro.

Tuesday

The Lovejoy branch of the Clayton County library system, 1721 McDonough Road, Hampton, will host Atlanta-based poet, Miggie 9, on Tuesday, July 15, from 7 p.m., to 8 p.m., for an evening of poetry which brings hip-hop, rock and soul together. July 19

The Clayton County Board of Education will vote on the final adoption of the 19.836 millage rate during a called meeting on Saturday, July 19, at 9 a.m., in the Clayton County Performing Arts Center, 2530 Mt. Zion Parkway, Jonesboro.

July 22

The Morrow branch of the Clayton County Library System, 6225 Maddox Road, Morrow, will host Travis Brown, author of "Math on the Mic," on Tuesday, July 22, from 5 p.m., to 7 p.m. Brown will talk to children about the ways in which learning math can be fun. July 28

The Clayton County Board of Education will hold its July work session on Monday, July 28, at 7 p.m., in the recital hall at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center, 2530 Mt. Zion Parkway, Jonesboro.

The United States Air Force recently announced Airman Barrett G. Johnson, a 2005 graduate of Mundy's Mill High School, has graduated from a six-week basic military training course at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas. During his training, Johnson studied the Air Force mission; organization; military customs and courtesies; human relations, and rifle marksmanship. Airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Jonesboro resident Abby Lewis.

The United States Army recently announced Pvt. Quentin M. Hand, son of Jonesboro resident Kathy Amey and Newnan resident Buddy Hand, has graduated from a nine-week basic infantry training course at Fort Benning in Columbus. During his training, Quentin Hand studied weapons; map reading; battlefield operations and tactics; military courtesy; military justice, and first aid. He is a 2002 graduate of Starrs Mill High School in Fayetteville.

Jonesboro resident Tiffany Reed and Riverdale resident Juliette Collins have received Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarships from the University of Georgia. Reed and Collins will be freshmen at UGA during the 2008-09 school year. The $5,000 per year scholarships are awarded to students who excel academically, and are the first members of their families to attend college.

Jonesboro resident Mary-Pat Hector, 10, was one of four metro Atlanta children who were recently recognized by Kohl's Department Stores as part of the Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship program. Hector, who wrote and directed a play to raise awareness about abuse, and donated money to a homeless shelter, will receive a $1,000 scholarship from Kohl's.
