Charles A. Gravitt, Sr.
Mr. Charles A. Gravitt, Sr., passed away, Tuesday, June 3, 2008 on his 71st birthday at his home.
He graduated in 1955 from O'Keefe High School. During his senior year, Charles placed second in the metro Atlanta High School tennis tournament. Upon graduation, Charles atteneded Georgia Institute of Technology for a period of time until he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served as a radio technician in the Strategic Air Command during the Cold War.
In 1961, Mr. Gravitt began a 35-year career with Delta Air Lines. His first posting at Delta was as a radio technician. Charles held many positions of increasing responsibility culminating as Director of Internal Auditing. During his tenure at Delta Air Lines, Mr. Gravitt received a Law Degree from John Marshall School of Law and an MBA from the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University.
Charles passed the bar in 1969. In the early 1970's, while on-loan from Delta Air Lines, Mr. Gravitt was detailed to then Gov. Jimmy Carter to work on a special economic development program. He received numerous laudatory comments for his detailed analysis. Mr. Gravitt also served with the Rotary of West End and served as president of the Club.
Upon retiring from Delta Air Lines, he worked for Delta Technology and lead the Hartsfield International Airport Y2K program. After retiring from Delta Technology, Mr. Gravitt practiced law in Jonesboro, Ga. In his later years, he was active on the bench and served as a Municipal Court Judge in Lake City, for the past 13 years.
Mr. Gravitt is survived by his wife of 44 years, Carole Barrett Gravitt, of Fayetteville; his daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Brian Deiters, of Stockbridge; his son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Angela Gravitt, of Overland Park, Kan.; and his son, Tim Gravitt, of Atlanta.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brian and Lyndsey Deiters, of Stockbridge, and by his grandson's wife, Maria Deiters, also of Stockbridge. Also, he is survived by his grandchildren, Sarah and Kaitlyn Gravitt, of Overland Park, Kan, and a great-grandchild, Christian Aidan Deiters, of Stockbridge; and a sister, Norma Gravitt Hyatt, of Villa Rica.
Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Ford-Stewart Funeral Home at 2 p.m., Friday, June 6. Interment will be at Crestlawn Memorial Cemetery in Atlanta. Jason B. Hughes
Mr. Jason B. Hughes, 39, of Jonesboro, passed away, June 2, 2008. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro. He is survived by his parents, Dan Z. and Betty Hughes, of Jonesboro; sister, Julie Hughes Farmer, of Jonesboro; and nephews, Stuart Z. Farmer, and Sydney E. Farmer.
Funeral services will be held, Thursday, June 5, at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro Worship Center. Lanson Newsome will officiate. Interment will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
