Celebration of family, marriage to be held in Jonesboro

The 3rd Annual Clayton County Marriage and Family Day Celebration will be held on the Historical Courthouse Lawn, in Jonesboro, Thursday, June 12, 6 to 7:30 p.m. There will be music, free Chick-fil-A, and four winners of the "My Dynamite Dad" essay contest will read their essays. There will be information from a number of Clayton County organizations about marriage, families and fathering. The event is put on by the Clayton County Marriage and Family Initiative. The Clayton County Farm Bureau will be sponsoring a booth at the Clayton County International Park on June 12, as part of National Men's Health week, from 11 a.m., to 2 p.m. The bureau will be promoting peanuts and their nutritional value and giving away samples of the Georgia Farm Bureau's own peanuts. There will be an agent on duty to answer any questions regarding all lines of insurance and the Farm Bureau's other member benefits. The booth will be in the VIP complex. The Headquarters Library of the Clayton County Library System is looking for people of all ages to display their artwork, collectibles, or examples of their crafts at the library. Clayton State University's Division of Continuing Education is once again offering its Youth University program. For 2008, the two camp sessions will be from June 9-27, and from July 7-25, in Jonesboro at Clayton State's newly renovated location at 9157 Tara Blvd. Youth University hours are from 9 a.m., to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with extended morning and evening care available at an additional fee. Both will be staffed by qualified teachers and counselors with backgrounds in education, recreation, writing, the arts and athletics. The registration fee is $399 per session. The Clayton County Headquarters library is offering a class on preventative auto maintenance for women, including instruction on checking the oil and the tire pressure. The class is taught by Darnell Jenkins on June 17 from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. The class will be held at the Headquarters library, 865 Battlecreek Road, in Jonesboro.

Platinum Real Estate's Michael Braswell and Wells Fargo Home Loans' Amy Seymour are holding a free Home Buying Seminar on June 19, at 7 p.m. At the seminar, you can learn the 11 steps to home ownership, first-time buyer programs and how to overcome credit issues. The event will be held at the Virginia Burton Gray Recreation Center, 1475 East Fayetteville Road, in Riverdale.

The Genealogical Society of Henry and Clayton Counties, Inc. will be meeting at the National Archives in Morrow on June 21, at 10 a.m. Mike Brubaker, an Archivist and Genealogist at the Atlanta History Center will be talking about the genealogical holdings of the Atlanta History Center which includes the "Magruder Collection," collection of newspapers dating to the 1800s. Betty English, author, retired teacher, story teller of true and fictional stories, who has lived in the both the U.S. and Australia will be sharing a wonderful story, "How to Kill Grandma." The University of Georgia, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Clayton County Cooperative Extension Service and the Master Gardeners of Clayton County, in cooperation with Southwood Garden Club, Redbud District, The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. and National Garden Clubs, Inc., is presenting a Flower Show, "Through the Year with Gardening" at Clayton County Headquarters Library, 865 Battlecreek Road, Jonesboro, Georgia, Friday, June 20, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, June 21, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show is open to the public and admission is free.

A "Run for Romania" will be held on June 21 at 8 a.m., starting at Hampton First Baptist Church, 85 McDonough Street. There will be a 5k and a 1-mile run, with entry costs at $12 and $17. New Birth South Metropolitan Church and the Georgia Department of Labor's Clayton County Career Center, is hosting a 2008 Empowerment Job Fair on Saturday, June 21, from 9 a.m., to 2 p.m., at the church, 2455 Mt. Carmel Road, in Hampton. More than 100 companies have been invited to participate in the job fair, and there will be free workshops on resume writing, interview tips and vocational rehabilitation. The Second Annual East Clayton County Day Festival hosted by State Rep. Mike Glanton and Clayton County District 1 Commissioner Sonna Singleton, in collaboration with Clayton County Parks and Recreation, will be held at the Carl Rhodenizer Recreation Center and Rex Park, located at 3499 Rex Road, in Rex. The festival will begin at 10 a.m. Music and entertainment will be provided by metro-area artists, including R&B, Gospel and cultural acts scheduled throughout the day. Admission is free. Activities for children include face painting, moonwalks, slides and pony rides. The event, according to organizers, is an effort to bring the East Clayton Community together for a day of family-oriented fun.
