Superintendent will address public on accreditation crisis

Saturday

Clayton County Public Schools will offer an Information and Education Workshop for all Board of Education candidates on Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m., to noon at the Professional Learning Center, 1087 Battle Creek Rd., Jonesboro. Dr. Mike Ward, from the University of Southern Mississippi, will lead the presentation.

The Clayton County Board of Education and Superintendent John Thompson will host a community information forum on Saturday, June 14, at 10 a.m., in the commons at Lovejoy High School, 1587 McDonough Rd., Hampton. The forum is designed to show the public how the school system is responding to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools'(SACS) threat to take away the district's accreditation if nine mandates for improvement are not met by Sept. 1.

Monday

The Clayton County Chamber of Commerce will host a political forum featuring the candidates for all seven open school board seats on Monday, June 16, from 6 p.m., to 9 p.m., at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center, 2530 Mt. June 23

The Clayton County Board of Education will hold two public hearings on the fiscal year 2009 Budget on Monday, June 23, at 11:45 a.m., and 6:30 p.m., in the recital hall at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center, 2530 Mt. Zion Pkwy., Jonesboro. This will be the public's only opportunity to address the board about the proposed budget.

June 30

The Clayton County Board of Education will hold its June Work Session on Monday, June 30, at 7 p.m., in the recital hall at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center, 2530 Mt. Zion Pkwy., Jonesboro. The board will vote on final adoption of the fiscal year 2009 budget.

July 14

The Clayton County Board of Education will hold its July Business Meeting on Monday, July 14, at 7 p.m., in the recital hall at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center, 2530 Mt. Zion Pkwy., Jonesboro.

Valdosta State University recently announced the following Clayton County residents made the school's Dean's List for the Spring 2008 semester: (Jonesboro) Robert Daniel Birely, Britney M. Chappell, Emily Ann Cook, Christina Marie Fox, Troy Smith Hand, Sabrina Zaneta Payton, Joel Wesley Tucker; (Riverdale) Chinique Lashay Hardison, (Ellenwood) Tremesa Monte Parris. A student must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average, and earn a 3.66 GPA or higher during a semester to earn a spot on the Dean's List.

Rex resident Michael Coleman Clayton graduated from the University of the South, in Sewanee, Tenn., on May 11 with a bachelor's degree in history.

Clayton County Public School's Budget and Finance Department was recently awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Program, which is sponsored by the Association of School Business Officials International.

The Clayton County Public Library system offers many services to students, including tutoring programs for those who speak either English or Spanish, and online practice tests and electronic test preparation books for the SAT, GED, ASVAB, and TOEFFL exams.
