The Bible tells us the devil -- Satan -- is out to seduce us, to lure us into his trap and bring us to ruin.
He makes things we know we should avoid look so good to us, so innocent. "You deserve it," he says. "It won't hurt anyone or anything. You will enjoy yourself and no one will ever know."
He lies to us and says it's OK for us to do whatever we want: "Every one's doing it, why shouldn't you?"
Sin may start with you telling a "little white lie," or taking something that doesn't belong to you. At first, you may get away with it and little things lead to larger things. Little white lies lead to big black lies that hurt and injure others. Taking a candy bar from a store leads to stealing from your firm or charging personal things to your company's credit card.
These are sins that will lead you into more sin because of the devil leading you into his trap. Sin may be small in our eyes and not so important, but with God, all sin is detestable and wrong. His enemy, the devil, who is the god of this world, is doing battle with the true God of this universe, the world is the battle field and we, the people of this world, are the prize, the ones being fought over.
The newspapers and television give the story and results of a typical battle that Satan appears to have won. A prominent and successful politician has been caught in Satan's trap. This man was lured by his own evil desires to do things which Satan made to look so good, so desirable to him. You can be sure the devil was assuring him it was OK for him to enjoy this sin that he knew to be wrong.
He said, "It's alright, go ahead, for no one will ever know and you will not get caught." But he did get caught and exposed to the world, and many were severely hurt by his sinful actions. I'm sure he is feeling rotten and kicking himself for being so stupid.
But the evil deed has been done, the devil has won this round and many have to pay dearly for his sin. I hope he learns a lesson from this: Sin will lure you in, and when you are involved, you will be exposed and caught and you will pay the price for your sin.
The Bible teaches there is a better way for one to live and be happy and blessed. God loves us and has fully provided for us through His Son Jesus Christ. Can you imagine the cost to our great God to send His blessed and beloved Son into the world as an example and teacher of mankind, knowing He would be rejected and beaten and killed and even nailed to a cruel cross?
Jesus said, "Greater love has no man, than he lay down His life for His friends." Praise God that He even wants to call us His friends! Romans 3:23 says, "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God." In Romans 6:23 we read, "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life."
Sin and sinners deserve to be destroyed, but God has given us a choice: if we will repent of our sins and choose Jesus as our Savior, He will forgive us. The Bible says in Romans 10:9-10, "If we confess with our mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in our heart God has raised Him from the dead, we will be saved. For with the mouth one confesses, resulting in righteousness, and with the heart one believes, resulting in salvation."
Jesus has paid for our sin and we can be forgiven because of what He has done, but if we continue to ignore God and Jesus Christ, we will pay for our own sins in an awful place called Hell, made for Satan and his angels.
Forever separated from the loving God, who has made us, and forgotten by all who are in Heaven. There will be no tears or sorrows in that wonderful place where we shall live with our God forever. I pray you have made the right choice or will determine to choose Jesus soon! Amen.
