Broker arrested after downtown Jonesboro shooting

Crime Scene Investigators were picking bloody clothes off the curb in downtown Jonesboro after a Thursday morning shooting.

The injured man was flown to Atlanta Medical Center after being shot in the back by his cousin, according to Jonesboro Police.

Police arrested 37-year-old Jason Butler, in connection with the shooting.

Butler is the managing broker at Perfect Properties, the 124 South Main St., realty company with the slogan, "Blessed to be a Blessing."

"It started out as a verbal altercation," said Detective Tim Jessup, "and then one of them threw a punch. In return, the other guy pulled a gun and shot him in the back."

Police did not identify the victim, or give any details about the midday argument which occurred at 124 South Main St.

Businessmen and women, along with local shopkeepers, stood and watched the crime scene investigators work inside the circle of yellow crime scene tape. It was draped over parked cars to mark off the scene in front of a suite of offices.

Many said they were disturbed, but not surprised by the violence on the quiet street, and, though they only had a few details, they told each other someone in real estate had been arrested for the shooting.

Butler was in the Clayton County jail Thursday night facing charges of aggravated assault, reckless conduct, discharging a firearm near a highway, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. His first court appearance is scheduled for Friday morning.

The wounded man went into emergency surgery at the Atlanta Medical Center, and was not thought to be in life-threatening condition Thursday.

"It appears he's going to make it," Jessup said.

Doctors were still concerned about the man's injuries, though, and could not say if he would be able to walk again.
