James W. Kinard
James W. Kinard, of Stockbridge, passed away on May 9, 2008, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Carol Kinard, of Stockbridge; his mother, Mary Brewer, of Jonesboro; sons, Glen Kinard, of Carrollton, Gary Kinard, of Villa Rica; stepdaughter, Stefanie McCullers, of Locust Grove; and stepson, Derrick Terrell, of McDonough, along with several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Barbara Lewis Pendergrass
Barbara Lewis Pendergrass, 73, of Colwell Road, Jackson, Ga., died Thursday evening, May 8, 2008 at the Sacred Journey Hospice in McDonough.
She was born in Duplin County, N.C. March 25, 1935, the daughter of the late Rufus James Lewis and Mary Elizabeth Mathis Lewis. She was a retired clerk at Ft. Gillem and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Forest Park. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband, Bobby Pendergrass, of Jackson; children, Ellis Drew and Debbie, Locust Grove, Tim and Jan Drew, McDonough, Bonnie and Curtis Richards, Summerdale, Ala., Doug and Dawn Drew, Peachtree City; sister, Margaret Gore, Wilmington, N.C.; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Barbara Lewis Pendergrass will be Saturday, May 10, at 3 p.m., in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum at the Jackson City Cemetery. Gene Whitaker, 77, of Hampton passed away on Friday, May 9, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Whitaker was born in Gadsden, Ala., on Aug. 15, 1930, to the late David Whitaker and the late Florence Ruth Smith Whitaker. He was preceded in death by daughter, Deborah Whitaker Eubanks. Mr. Whitaker was a member of Calvary Assembly of God.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Bobbie Whitaker; children and their spouses, Steve and Arleen Whitaker, of Tyrone; Roni and Chester Eubanks, Jr., of Molena; Randy and Deloris Whitaker, of Hampton; Alice and Marc Peterson, of Griffin; 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Gene Whitaker will be conducted on Monday, May 12, at 11 a.m., in the Chapel of Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Rev. Ken Vanderford will officiate. Interment will follow in Berea Cemetery. Friends may visit the family Sunday evening, 7- 9 p.m., at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to assist the family with funeral expenses.

Nellie Baker McKown
Nellie Baker McKown, passed into eternal rest May 9, 2008 at the age of 101. She was born Oct. 20, 1906 in Atlanta, and grew up in Forest Park.
After graduating high school, Mrs. McKown attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. Upon graduating in 1926, she began a 41-year teaching career with the Fulton County School System, starting at Joseph Humphries Elementary School in Atlanta. Known to many as "Miss Nellie," she taught the third, fourth, sixth and seventh grades.
Miss Nellie opened Blair Village Grammar School in 1952 as a teaching principal. She continued as a loving and caring educator until her retirement in 1967. Mrs. McKown was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Marion McKown, and her sister, Ethel Baker (Mrs. Colie) McKown.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Grace Collier; cousins, nieces and nephews. She was a long-time member of Forest Park First Baptist Church, where she taught young girls in Sunday School, and served as pianist and clerk. When asked what attributed to her long life, she answered "God's goodness!"
Funeral services for Miss Nellie will be held Sunday, May 11, at 3 p.m., at Forest Park First Baptist Church, with Rev. Reid Chambliss and Rev. Chad Ellis officiating. Interment will follow at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Forest Park. The family will receive friends, Saturday, May 10, 5-8 p.m., at Ward's Parkway Chapel. Horis A.
