A 67-year-old man was found face down in a bathtub, with a bullet wound in his shoulder and another in his head, Clayton County Police said.
The man, Jack Uselton of Fayetteville, was allegedly murdered by his grandson. The Clayton County police believe Herbert George Ledford III, 24, shot and killed Uselton and then attempted to burn down the house to cover up the crime, Capt. Greg Dickens said.
Uselton was reportedly asked by his daughter to check on Ledford on Friday night, at 11991 Panhandle Road, in Hampton. Ledford has a medical condition that caused his mother to worry, according to police Uselton drove over from Fayetteville, and arrived at about 10:30 p.m.
The next morning, a neighbor called 911 to report "smoke and the smell of gasoline, " Dickens said.
Firefighters found a small fire in the bedroom of the house, put it out, and found Uselton dead in the bathroom, apparently shot twice and killed. While the police waited for a warrant to enter the house, Dickens said, neighbors noted "Ledford and his 1997 Chevy pick-up were gone."
Ledford owns a .40-caliber gun, was apparently the last person to see his grandfather and seemingly took off after the house was set on fire, but, on Sunday afternoon, detectives couldn't say what the alleged motivation might be.
"We don't know," Dickens said,  "what transpired to cause this man to murder his grandpa."
While police were at the scene, Ledford showed up, saying he'd been gone all night, and was arrested. He is being charged with murder, arson and aggravated assault.
