Deadline nears for master gardener applications

Clayton County Master Gardener Program applications are being accepted until Wednesday, Nov. 12, for the class of 2009. It begins in January and runs through mid-March. Classes are held at participating counties on Mondays, from 9 a.m., to 4 p.m. Applications are available by calling (770) 473-5434, or e-mailing hortpa@uga.edu.

Arts Clayton's annual Holiday Wine Tasting and hors d'oeurves will be held on Nov. 13, from 6-9 p.m., at the gallery, 136 S. Main St., Jonesboro. British pianist Stephen Hough, recipient of a MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Award and a prolific recording artist with more than two dozen recorded releases, gives the first solo piano recital of Spivey Hall's 2008/2009 season on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 8:15 p.m. He will perform works by Bach/Cortot and Fauré, plus Franck's Prélude, Choral et Fugue, Copland's Piano Variations, and Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 3 in B minor. The second reader in the 2008/2009 Clayton State University Visiting Writers Reading Series will be slam poet and performance artist Kodac Harrison, who will be appearing on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m,. in room 272 of the James M. Baker University Center.

The Clayton State Theatre's presentation of "Cabaret" will feature four performances: Friday, Nov. 14, Saturday, Nov. 15, Thursday, Nov. 20, and Friday, Nov. 21, all starting at 8 p.m., in the Clayton State Theatre, room G-132 of the University's Arts & Sciences Building. On Nov. 20, from 11 a.m., to 1 p.m., The Clean Air Campaign and the Atlanta Regional Commission will host a free Lunch 'n Learn seminar for employers interested in an update on local and regional transportation issues. Regional experts will provide information on Atlanta's most congested roadways, the state of our transit network and plans for future structural and technological growth in the region. Clayton State University's Department of Mathematics will hold a Mathematics Colloquium on combinatorics and graph theory, at 3 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 21, in room 327 of the James M. Baker University Center on the Clayton State campus. The department sponsors a monthly colloquium that is free and open to the public. Dr. Yi Zhao, assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at Georgia State University, will be the speaker.

The 16th Annual Holiday at Home Parade in Historic Downtown Jonesboro will be held on Nov. 22. Presented by Arts Clayton, Clayton County, the City of Jonesboro, with the annual sponsorship of Heritage Bank, the Holiday at Home Parade features floats, high school marching bands, ROTC units, community groups and civic organizations, fire trucks, vintage cars, police safety vehicles, Sparkey the Fire Dog, parade host Truett Cathy, and Santa Claus. This year's theme is "There's No Place Like Home." The parade steps off at 4:30 p.m., at the intersection of McDonough Street and Stockbridge Road, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the Grand Tree on the lawn of the Historic Courthouse. Sony Electronics and Waste Management team up to host free electronics recycling, on Saturday, Nov. 22 at Turner Field. Atlanta Festival Ballet's holiday favorite, the Nutcracker, will be performed at the Clayton Performing Arts Center, 2530 Mt.
