New business-counseling service opens

A small-business counseling company is coming to College Park.

SCORE works in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration to provide free counseling and low-cost workshops for entrepreneurs.

The organization specializes in helping businesses through the start-up and growth stages, and uses the slogan, "Counselors to American's Small Business."

SCORE announced it will open its 390th U.S. office, in College Park next week, it's fourth office in Georgia.

"The new SCORE office in College Park will have a very positive impact on local entrepreneurs and small-business owners," said CEO Ken Yancey. "SCORE's business mentoring and services will be an asset to the area, particularly for businesses that face tough times."

The city's Interim Development Director Jamilah Stephens hailed the office's opening as a real benefit for the city.

"In light of today's challenging business climate," Stephens said, "this is a great opportunity for business owners. SCORE and its counselors provide a wealth of experience that allow small and large businesses to grow their market share, product or service. College Park is honored to have SCORE join our business community."

The organization was recruited, in part, by the Old National Merchants Association. Don Winbush, association president, said he was really pleased at the office's opening.

"Having a valuable organization, such as SCORE, become even more accessible to the businesses of Old National and to the larger business community, is a real boon, and we look forward to having them as a resource partner," he said.

The office is set to open on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at noon. It is opening on Main Street, and will initially offer free mentoring and advice on Thursdays, from 10 a.m., to 2 p.m.
